Vertigo is More than a Hitchcock Film

I have neglected this blog for a couple of weeks but I have a good excuse: Zenyatta!  In the weeks leading up to the Breeders' Cup races on November 5-6, I was utterly obsessed with Zenyatta's run at history.  She didn't quite make it, losing for the first time by just a nose, but she did prove her greatness.  Instead of writing this blog, I was reading articles about Zenyatta, watching videos of Zenyatta and even creating a little tribute website featuring some of my photos of the big mare.

Okay, the race is behind us and it's time to move forward! I've had some problems with vertigo for several years but it had almost disappeared until the last few months.  I went to the doctor today and she thinks I may have Meniere's disease, given the symptoms.  Fortunately, the attacks are short-lived and so far I haven't had more than about one a week (or even less often).  My allergies may have some bearing on it, so she gave me a prescription for Flonase (a nasal steroid spray) and suggested Sudafed in addition to the OTC Zyrtec I've been taking.  I will also be taking a small dose of a mild diuretic that seems to help with Meniere's, most likely by reducing pressure in the fluid in the inner ear.  I'm supposed to reduce my sodium intake as well, and avoid caffeine, alcohol and stress.  I don't drink much, so that's not really a problem, but I do enjoy my tea and right now my job is pretty stressful ... This is going to be interesting!

Oh wow, that vertigo thing sounds pretty unpleasant. Isn't there a cure for it?

Oh, and I'm glad you had fun watching Zenyatta. :)
